2nd US college shooting in one day leaves two dead

In yet another college shooting in the US, two individuals have been reported killed and another wounded at a community college in the state of Kentucky.

Police authorities announced that they are holding two people, including the suspected shooter, who allegedly used a semiautomatic pistol to shoot the victims Tuesday afternoon at Hazard Community and Technical College in eastern Kentucky, about 90 miles (140 km) southeast of the state’s major city of Lexington.

In another college shooting on Tuesday, a student at a college in downtown St. Louis, in the Midwestern US state of Missouri, shot a school administrator with a handgun before shooting himself. Authorities announced, however, that the victim and the shooter were taken to a hospital and both are expected to survive.

In the Kentucky shooting, those killed were described by police as a man in his 50’s and a woman in her late 20s. The injured victim is reportedly a female teenager, who was taken to the University of Kentucky hospital in Lexington.

Police authorities in Hazard did not identify the victims or those arrested after the shooting and suggested that the incident did not involve anyone in the college and appeared to be an outcome of a “domestic conflict.”

College authorities, however, have cancelled classes for the school’s 4,700 students on Wednesday due to ongoing police investigation.

The latest US shootings come just over a month after a shooting massacre at a Connecticut elementary school killed 20 small children as well as six school teachers and administrators.

Amid heated rhetoric and pledges of introducing tougher gun control measures, federal US officials are yet to take any meaningful steps on the issue.

Meanwhile, American media have widely reported that gun sales in the nation have drastically surged in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting in anticipation of possible laws that would restrict the sale of assault rifles, widely used in mass killings across the US.
