Iran, Germany to produce 50 diesel locomotives

Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Abbas Akhundi, announced on Monday that Iran and Germany have reached agreement to produce 50 diesel locomotives.

Akhundi said the locomotives will be manufactured in MAPNA Company of Iran in cooperation with German Siemens Company.
The Minister made the remarks on the sidelines of a ceremony to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for transportation cooperation.
He added that German Federal Minister’s visit to Iran is aimed at following up the already reached agreements for cooperation in various fields of transportation.
The minister said there are 165 diesel locomotives in Iran now, 130 of which are operating in the railway network, while the rest are getting repaired.
Akhundi said Iran needs 150 locomotives, but by the purchase, part of the needs are addressed.
He added that a number of the locomotives will be for future needs, however.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Akhundi expressed the hope that negotiations to purchase 70 electrical locomotives with transfer of its know-how will come to conclusion.
The two countries signed a MoU on Monday evening for development of transport cooperation in different airport, railway, maritime and road sectors.
German Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Alexander Dobrindt, heading a 30–man delegation, is on a visit to Iran.
