Another Shia Muslim lawyer has been killed in an attack by unknown gunmen in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi in the latest wave of assaults on Shias in the country.

The lawyer, Ghulam Haider, was on his way home when unidentified assailants shot him dead on Jehangir Road in Karachi on Friday, according to police.

The lawyer is the fifth Shia figure killed in Karachi in the past few days.

On Thursday, a Shia lawyer and a youth were gunned down in Karachi. The lawyer, identified as Waqar Shah, was shot in the head as well as in the chest when his car came under attack from unknown gunmen in Karachi’s Gulshan-i-Iqbal area.

On Wednesday, Haider Raza, a medical doctor, was targeted while leaving his hospital in the city’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar neighborhood.

Another physician identified as Qasim Abbas, was shot dead on Tuesday in the Water Pump neighborhood of the southern port city of Karachi, when gunmen riding a motorbike opened fire on his car.

Pro-Taliban militants target Shia Muslims in Pakistan on a regular basis, attacking doctors and lawyers as well as religious gatherings.

The country’s Shia leaders blame the government for failing to provide security for the Muslim minority.

Islamabad has also come under fire by Human Rights Watch.

The New York-based group has urged Pakistan to hold accountable those responsible for ordering and participating in the deadly attacks on Shias.
