Another US soldier killed in Afghanistan

An improvised explosive device (IED) has killed a US soldier in Afghanistan, says NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

“An ISAF service member was killed yesterday in an IED strike in southern Afghanistan,” ISAF said in a statement on Monday.

The military alliance said the service member was American.

Earlier on Sunday, an explosion in the southern province of Helmand left a US marine dead and four others wounded.

The first British journalist was also killed in the Sunday blast, according to Britain’s Ministry of Defense.

The US and NATO countries have 113,000 troops in Afghanistan. Nearly 1600 foreign soldiers have died in the war-torn country since the 2001 US-led invasion.

The rising number of casualties has drastically reduced public support for the eight-year conflict, according to opinion polls in Western countries.
