Attack on Iran Consulate, unfortunate

Afghanistan has expressed regret over the recent attack on the Iranian Consulate in the western Afghan city of Herat, describing the incident as very unfortunate.

Speaking in his weekly press conference in Kabul on Sunday, Afghan Foreign Ministry Spokesman Janan Mosazai assured Iranian and other foreign diplomats residing in Afghanistan that the Afghan government will protect them properly.
He said the incident in Herat should not have taken place, adding that the quick action of security forces prevented any harm to the Iranian Consulate and diplomats.
Mosazai stated that the Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ershad Ahmadi will discuss the development with Iranian Ambassador to Kabul Abolfazl Zohrehvand later on Sunday.
On Saturday, a group of Afghan protesters stormed the Iranian Consulate in Herat and broke the windows of the building. At least one person was killed and five others injured following clashes between the police and protesters.
Iran Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham condemned the assault as “unacceptable.”
