Maliki Vows to Regain Control over Nineveh, Says Seizure of Mosul “Conspiracy”

Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Wednesday that the seizure of northern city Mosul, was a “conspiracy”, and that the government will hold perpetrators responsible.

In a televised speech, Maliki said he will form an army of volunteers to support the regular armed forces in the face of the terrorist attack.

He also said that the Iraqi government all police and army forces “who withdrew from the face of terrorism” by abandoning the city ahead of the attack on Mosul by militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

Maliki said ISIL militants were fighting in Iraq after recently facing losses in Syria, where they are one of the many terrorist groups involved in the Syrian conflict.
