Battle for Mosul Day 247: Iraqi Troops Pushing to Last Few Meters Held by ISIL

 

The comprehensive military campaign by Iraqi military forces to liberate the Northern city of Mosul from ISIL militants continued on Sunday, as local reports said the government forces recaptured more areas in Mosul’s Old City as they pushed to the last few meters held by the terrorist group.

Iraqi Troops Regains More Ground in Mosul’s Old City, Kill 79 ISIL Militants

Iraqi government forces on Sunday recaptured more areas and killed 79 ISIL militants in Mosul’s Old City as they pushed to the last few meters held by the terrorist group.

The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said the army’s Counter-Terrorism Forces recaptured Mekkawi area in the Old City and raised Iraqi flags above the area’s buildings, Iraqi News reported.

Federal Police chief, Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat, said his forces killed the militants and set 550 civilians free after taking over Bab Jadid neighborhood in the Old City and consummated the recapture of al-Shifa district, a medical and health facilities hub north of the medieval district.

Iraqi Troops Foil ISIL Attack, Kill Twenty Militants in Western Anbar

Iraqi forces foiled a huge attack by the ISIL militant group in a village, West of Anbar after the militants attacked the Iraqi army and the tribal forces in the Western Iraqi province, local media said.

“ISIL militants attacked the Iraqi army and the tribal forces in al-Sakra village, West of Haditha town, Western Anbar, using armored and booby-trapped vehicles and weapons” said the mayor of Haditha, Mabrouk Hamid, Iraqi News reported.

The army and tribal troops thwarted the attack and inflicted huge losses on the enemy, killing twenty militants, including suicide attackers, and destroying their weapons, Hamid added.

Iraqi Police Chief Says Still Four Districts Remain under ISIL Grip in Mosul’s Old City

A senior Iraqi officer declared the remaining districts that are still under ISIL control in Mosul’s Old City.

“The remaining regions for the Federal Police troops to free from ISIL militants in the Old City include al-Nujeifi, al-Sarai and parts of Lakash and Bab Jadid,” said Chief of Federal Police Shaker Jawdat, Irqaqi News reported.

The four regions, according to Jawdat, are still held by ISIL. Once liberated, Federal Police will announce accomplishing its goals there.

In a press release, Jawdat revealed death of dozens of militants as his troops advanced to liberate al-Shifa district, a main district in North of Old City.
