German police evict Occupy Frankfurt camp outside ECB

German police have evicted a group of anti-capitalism protesters who had set up a camp outside the European Central Bank (ECB) headquarters in Frankfurt since October 2011.

The police officers encircled the Occupy Frankfurt camp on Monday and ordered the protesters to take down their tents and leave the area voluntarily or face forceful removal.

The protesters, who had been demonstrating against social and economic inequality, left the area peacefully but said that their fight was not over.

“I am sure that the people will fight on. We have decided that we won’t fight with the police now because there is no point, there is way too many of them here,” said one of the protesters.

The police cleared the camp following a court decision which barred the Occupy protesters from remaining on park territory owned by the city.

The camp was set up in mid October last year, a few weeks after protesters settled into Zuccotti Park in New York.
