Heavy clashes continued in Deir ez-Zor, Wednesday, as Syrian government forces battled fighters of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).
Ibrahim, an officer in the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) described the ongoing clashes, saying: “Every day there is combat. They’ll use heavy weapons from range, or they’ll try to infiltrate in the middle of the night. They attack with suicide vests and car bombs. The battle goes on every day.”
He added: “The city of Deir ez-Zor will be liberated in a week, at the most.”
Deir ez-Zor, which is situated southeast of IS’ former stronghold of Raqqa, was besieged by Islamic State in 2014. The SAA with the help of the Russian Aerospace Forces recently helped break the siege.
