Senior Iranian MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi said the US and its regional allies have committed a grave mistake by lending financial and military support to terrorist groups in the region.

Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaedddin Boroujerdi made the remark in a meeting with visting Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kentaro Sonoura on Saturday evening in Tehran.

He went on to add, “the mistake that the US and its regional allies have made by providing terrorist groups with financial and military support to strengthen them, requires collective and international cooperation among all countries to be contained.”

“Iran is earnest in combating terrorism,” Boroujerdi stressed. “Since terrorism knows no boundaries, intelligence cooperation between Tehran and Tokyo can help in this regard.”

Boroujerdi further highlighted the historical and improving relations between Iran and Japan, adding “ever since the nuclear agreement and the easing of sanctions against Iran, better conditions have been provided for developing ties between Tehran and Tokyo.”

The Iranian MP also underscored the high level of interactions between the parliaments and governments of the two countries, saying these interactions should be used to improve relations in other areas of common interest.

The Japanese minister, for his part, said that the aim of his visit was to hold consultations with Iranian officials on the activation of areas of cooperation between the two sides.

He stressed that cooperation in scientific, nuclear, medical and environmental fields should be expanded with Iran along with good political and parliamentary ties.

He further referred to terrorist moves in the region, adding “these extremist terrorist groups have certainly no presence or support in my country and fighting them requires international determination and cooperation.”
