British Foreign Secretary William Hague claims his country is committed to Lebanon’s stability after British-led efforts led to the blacklisting of Hezbollah military wing by the European Union.

This comes as Hezbollah is a member of the ruling coalition government in Lebanon and holds 10 percent of the parliamentary seats in the country.

“I welcome the agreement today by EU Foreign Ministers to designate Hizballah’s military wing as a terrorist organization,” Hague said.

He further raised eyebrows by claiming that the designation “will do nothing to affect the EU’s and the UK’s strong relationship with, and support for, Lebanon” and that “UK remains deeply committed to Lebanon’s stability”.

His claims of supporting stability in Lebanon went directly against his Lebanese counterpart’s assessment of the situation.

Lebanese caretaker Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour said after the EU move that it “will hinder Lebanese political life in the future, especially considering our sensitivities in Lebanon”.

Meanwhile, the country’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said he regrets the development and will pursue the matter through diplomatic channels.

Britain and its western allies claim Hezbollah has been behind a bomb attack on a bus carrying tourists at the international airport in the Bulgarian city of Burgas on July 18, 2012, that claimed five Zionists out of the seven killed in the blast.

The Lebanese movement has strongly denied any responsibility for the attack but the EU and their allies insist on labeling Hezbollah for the bombing despite their failure to offer evidence on the allegations.
