ISIS defeat will not be Iran’s victory: US Vice President Pence

US Vice President Mike Pence commended geopolitical changes in the Middle East, hinting at a recent convergence of Saudi and Israeli interests, at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference in Washington D.C. on Monday.

“The winds of change are blowing across the Middle East. Long standing enemies are becoming partners, old foes are finding new ground for cooperation,” said Pence.

He went on to say that “we will not allow the defeat of ISIS to become a victory for Iran,” which he said “seeks to carve out a cordon of influence running through Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.”

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, who also attended at the conference, lauded US President Donald Trump’s “courage” to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem.

Haley argued that Israel gets “bullied” by the UN because “the countries that don’t like Israel are used to being able to get away with it.”
