Wave of terrorist attacks kills 23 in Iraq
Nearly two dozen people have been killed and more than 200 others wounded in a wave of terrorist attacks in Iraq.

A car bomb went off in a commercial street in the northern city of Kirkuk near the local headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party on Wednesday, leaving at least 16 people dead and 190 others injured, according to health officials.

The bombing was apparently meant to strike local offices of the Kurdish Democratic Party, led by Massoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan region.

Another car bomb attack in the town of Tuz Khurmatu south of Kirkuk claimed the lives of two people and injured over 25 others. The attack was carried out near the offices of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

In Baghdad, officials said five people were killed in three separate attacks.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombings, but militants affiliated with al-Qaeda are commonly blamed for such attacks in Iraq.

The recent bomb attacks came in the wake of the killing of an Iraqi lawmaker along with three of his body guards and two other civilians in the western province of Anbar on Tuesday.

On December 31, 2012, over 20 people, including children, were killed and 80 others injured in a wave of attacks in several cities and towns in the country.

The Iraqi government has stepped up efforts to increase security across the country over the past few months.
