Several students have been injured and many others arrested in fresh clashes with Egyptian security forces in the capital, Cairo, and the country’s second largest city, Alexandria.

Egyptian security forces fired tear gas at students in Cairo’s al-Azhar University for a fourth day on Wednesday, arresting several who took part in protests in support of Egypt’s ousted president, Mohamed Morsi.

Reports said several other universities in the capital have become the scene of violent conflicts between police and students.

Similar clashes were also reported in Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria, as protesters demanded an end to the military rule and the reinstatement of Morsi. Several people were detained as police tried to disperse demonstrators.

Egypt’s universities have been scene of mass protests by students supporting the ousted president.

On Tuesday, security forces clashed with students on two university campuses in Cairo and Asyut. The Health Ministry confirmed that 36 people were injured in the violence.

The al-Azhar student union has called for a strike across the university’s branches after the death of two fellow students in clashes with security forces on Monday.

Egypt has been gripped by political turmoil and street protests since early July when the army ousted Morsi and appointed the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mahmoud Mansour, as the country’s interim president.

The army-backed interim government has launched a bloody crackdown on pro-Morsi protests led by the Muslim Brotherhood.

About 1,000 people were killed in a week of violence between Morsi supporters and security forces after police dispersed their protest camps in a deadly operation on August 14.

The massacre sparked international condemnation and prompted world bodies to call for an independent investigation into the violence.
