A roadside bomb attack has left one Thai marine dead and four others wounded in Thailand’s southern province of Narathiwat.

The explosive device, installed along a highway route, targeted the soldiers who were on their daily patrol in the Bacho district of Narathiwat Province Thursday morning, said Thai police officer Lance Chakrit Chaiseesa.

The attack claimed the life of a 23-year-old solider and injured four others, including the patrol leader.

According to reports, a bomb-disposal squad was immediately sent to investigate the scene of the incident. The bomb, discovered to be a 25kg gas cylinder attached to a telecommunication device, was concealed in a garbage can, reports added.

No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, but Bangkok blames such incidents on insurgents active in the violence-wracked south of the Asian country.

Three Muslim-majority provinces in southern Thailand have been plagued by deadly insurgency since 2004, which has claimed the lives of 5,000 people so far.
