Millions of Afghan people suffer from poverty and unemployment while the US spends over 6 billion dollars every month in the war-torn country, Press TV reports.

Senior officials in Washington say they spend more than six billion dollars of taxpayers’ money in Afghanistan every month.

However, international bodies and charity groups say Afghanistan still remains one of the poorest countries in the world.

Figures show the money is spent on US soldiers, military operations, as well as civilian and military contractors.

Several charity organizations including Oxfam has repeatedly criticized the US and its NATO allies for failing to tackle the poverty across the war-ravaged country.

Insecurity, however, continues to grow across the country, with the Afghan population suffering from poverty and unemployment.

Several recent studies show Afghanistan also faces an acute problem of malnutrition and food insecurity. The Afghan children suffer from one of the highest levels of chronic malnutrition in the world.

The rise in the price of food products, such as rice, cooking oil, and meat has pushed many Afghans, who are among the poorest people in the world, into a high risk of food shortage.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Commerce says the country is highly import-dependent when it comes to basic goods. Afghanistan does not produce much to meet its needs and imports most of its food from neighboring countries.

The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but the country is still gripped by violence, insecurity and poverty.
