France-backed CAR violence against muslims claims 30 more lives

bf8d297658913a195a9a734d4657d166_LAt least 30 people have been killed in the Central African Republic in the latest outbreak of sectarian violence.
The Central African Red Cross said on Friday that it had retrieved 29 bodies from the streets of the capital Bangui after heavy fighting broke out overnight.
The relief organization said the victims were either shot or hacked to death with machetes.
A Chadian peacekeeper on patrol in the city was also killed in a grenade attack by Christian anti-Balaka militiamen.
A Red Cross official said the overall death toll was likely to rise.
The Central African Republic spiraled into chaos in March when the Seleka fighters overthrew President Francois Bozize and brought Michel Djotodia to power. Bozizé fled the country after his ouster.
On Thursday, Amnesty International said that clashes between the Seleka rebels and the anti-Balaka militiamen had left about 1,000 people dead in Bangui two weeks ago.
France invaded its former colony on December 5 after the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution giving the African Union and France the go-ahead to send troops to the country.
Paris claims the aim of the mission is to create stability in the country in order to allow humanitarian aid to reach violence-hit areas.
Amnesty said despite the foreign intervention, “civilians are being willfully killed on a daily basis, with at least 90 additional people killed since December 8”.
