Gingrich: Obama lied to Americans

Former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich says that President Barack Obama lied to the American people about his immigration executive orders.

“The president lied to the American people. What he is doing is not just prosecutorial discretion. He’s creating whole new program, setting up whole new bureaucracies, [and] is going to spend millions and millions of dollars without any authorization or appropriation,” Gingrich told a radio show on Sunday.

The former presidential candidate joined other Republicans in criticizing Obama’s executive action for illegal immigrants.

Obama has insisted on his plans to overhaul the immigration system through executive action.

The immigration changes could bring some form of legal status to many immigrants in the United States.

The executive orders allow for up to 5 million undocumented workers to apply for deferred deportation.

Critics say that the order would have devastating effects on American citizens.

Gingrich said that the US president’s actions were not in line with the Constitution.

“It’s very dangerous as a precedent. Who knows what some future president might do with that kind of attitude?” he argued.

Last week, Republican Senator Rand Paul called on Congress to take legal action against Obama should he consider his executive action on immigration.

“We should take him to court,” Paul said. “Our founders were very clear… [in] the Constitution that the Congress writes the law.”
