Gunmen kill Iraqi soldier in Fallujah

One soldier of the Iraqi Army has been killed and another injured in a shooting incident in the central province of al-Anbar.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Aswat al-Iraq news agency on Saturday: “An armed group attacked a military vehicle patrol while on duty in the al-Askari neighborhood of Fallujah city located roughly 69 kilometers west of Baghdad, killing a soldier and injuring another one.”
The police promptly cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident.
Bombings and shootings have recently increased across Iraq, and many believe that the attacks are being carried out to undermine the central government.
There has been a steep rise in violence since December 2011, when an arrest warrant was issued for fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been charged with running a death squad targeting Iraqi officials and Muslims.
In response, the government has stepped up efforts to increase security across the country.
