Torrential rains triggered by super typhoon Haiyan has hit China’s southern Guangxi Zhuang region and Hainan province, claiming at least six lives, reports say.

At least five people were killed in Hainan province and one drowned in the neighbouring Guangxi region on Monday after the typhoon slashed across China’s southern part, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the country’s civil ministry, about 600 houses were damaged and 51 collapsed following the downpours triggered by the weakened typhoon Haiyan. Nearly 39,000 were also evacuated in the southern island province of Hainan.

The local meteorological station forecasted the rainstorms would continue to sweep through the region until Tuesday, issuing a severe rainstorm, high-level flood alert in several areas.

The storm packed gales with a speed of about 118 kilometers (73 miles) per hour after making landfall in Vietnam in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to the Vietnamese authorities, over 8000,000 were evacuated from their houses in 11 central provinces.

Haiyan, one of the strongest storms recorded on earth, pounded the eastern Philippine island of Samar during the early hours of November 8, before barreling into six central islands.

Some 10,000 people were reported to have lost their lives in the city of Tacloban and hundreds elsewhere in the Philippines. Hundreds of thousands of people were driven from their homes, throughout the storm-stricken country.
