Hamas Agrees to US Ceasefire Proposal

Hamas has announced its acceptance of a proposal presented by the United States' regional envoy. The proposal reportedly entails the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.

Basem Naim, a member of the Political Bureau of the Gaza-based resistance movement, announced on Tuesday that they have accepted the proposal put forward by American envoy Steve Witkoff for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of hostile forces.

A Palestinian official stated that they are currently awaiting a response from the occupation.

Naim, however, refrained from providing specific details regarding the proposal.

Earlier this month, Naim reported that Witkoff had personally guaranteed the group that the United States would exert pressure on Israeli authorities to lift its near-total blockade of the Gaza Strip and allow humanitarian aid to enter.

According to Naim, the envoy indicated that the United States would commence exerting pressure within two days following the release of American-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander by Hamas, which occurred on May 12.

A Hamas member reported that Steve Witkoff had assured a public appeal from Trump for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, along with calls for negotiations to establish a “permanent ceasefire.”

Witkoff, however, “took no such actions,” Naim stated at that time.

The comments align with the United States’ longstanding support for Israel, considered its closest regional ally, and highlight Washington’s continual efforts to shield Tel Aviv from repercussions resulting from its actions.

The conflict in Gaza, initiated following a retaliatory operation by resistance fighters, has resulted in the tragic deaths of over 53,977 Palestinians, predominantly women and children.

An intense and comprehensive blockade imposed by Israel has had a devastating impact on the inhabitants of the already impoverished and conflict-stricken region. Humanitarian organizations have condemned Israel for allegedly using starvation as a tool of warfare against the population in Gaza.
