Velayati: Arab regimes plot to sabotage Syria peace plan by inciting bloodshed

A senior advisor to The Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei says certain Arab regimes are attempting to sabotage the peace process in Syria by fueling violence in the country.

“Some Arab regimes seek to lead to failure the mission of [UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria] Kofi Annan through intensifying the bloodshed in Syria,” Ali Akbar Velayati said on Sunday.

Velayati added that those Arab states are planning to sabotage the peace deal proposed by Annan through sending mercenaries and trafficking weapons to Syria with the support of Israel and the West

Velayati added that these measures are aimed at exacting revenge on the wave of the Islamic Awakening in Egypt and North of Africa that overthrew “puppet dictators.”

“How can countries, where the system of ruling is identical to those of the Medieval times and whose people are deprived of the most basic rights, speak of freedom, democracy, and human rights in Syria?” the Iranian official said in reference to countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Velayati noted that the recent terrorist attacks in Syria are the manifestation of a plot designed to overthrow the Syrian government which is a supporter of the resistance front and the enemy of Israel.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since March 2011.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia are among the countries that have adopted a hawkish stance toward Syria since the beginning of the unrest.

Damascus says “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” are behind the country’s unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
