Hamas member ‘tortured to death’ in West Bank

Abu-Zuhri

The Islamic Hamas movement has accused the Palestinian Authority of killing one of its leaders held in a prison in the West Bank city of al-Khalil.

Sheikh Kamal Abu T’eima, 44, died in the King Hussein Medical center in Amman, Jordan on Tuesday, medics and hospital officials confirmed.

Hamas says the Palestinian Preventive Security Service (PPSS) in al-Khalil tortured Abu T’eima to death, hanging him by the wrists for 37 consecutive days.

Abu T’eima was detained from his home in al-Fawwar refugee camp on September 15, 2008 and was released on June 3 due to ‘failing health condition’.

He had been on life support since July 26 because of suffering several blood clots in his brain following a nine-month imprisonment by the PPSS.

Hamas senior official Sami Abu Zuhri said the Palestinian resistance movement held the Palestinian Authority accountable for the death of its senior member.

Earlier, another 28-year-old member of Hamas, Haytham Amro, died after being interrogated by Palestinian Intelligence personnel.

Scores of Palestinian fighters remain under difficult conditions in detention centers run by the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas condemns the ‘torture of hundreds of operatives in the West Bank’ as a routine in Palestinian jails, while Islamic Jihad has also called on the authority to stop arresting its fighters in the West Bank.
