Hamas reiterates its demands, calling for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza region

The Palestinian resistance group Hamas, operating in the Gaza Strip, has reiterated its principal demands for progressing in negotiations with Israel. These demands include a complete Israeli withdrawal from the region, the exchange of Israeli detainees for Palestinian prisoners, and assurances that Israel will not reignite military hostilities against Gaza.

In a statement issued on Sunday, spokesperson Hazem Qassem addressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s consistent refusals to fully withdraw from the disputed territory, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region.

Qassem has disclosed that talks continue with mediators from Qatar and Egypt as efforts persist towards launching a second phase of negotiations.

He stressed that Hamas would not consent to prolong the initial phase of the ceasefire deal established with the regime in January, aimed at halting Tel Aviv’s ongoing 15-month conflict against Gaza.

The initial phase of the ceasefire has come to an end without being extended. This period witnessed the release of several Israeli captives in exchange for thousands of Palestinian detainees.

Hamas remained firm in its decision not to extend the initial phase of operations, despite significant pressure from opposing authorities to prolong the phase and release all remaining captives simultaneously.

The group has categorically dismissed the demand, labeling it as “unacceptable,” and has called for the initiation of a second phase.

The demand emerged following Tel Aviv’s implementation of an unsanctioned postponement in the release of a group of Palestinian prisoners. This occurred despite Hamas having already transferred several Israeli captives, who were intended to be part of a prisoner exchange agreement.

In a recent statement, Qassem criticized the regime for allegedly failing to adhere to the terms of the ceasefire agreement. He emphasized that the release of captives remains contingent upon Tel Aviv’s compliance with the accord’s stipulations.

The regime has temporarily halted the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, a strategy believed to apply pressure on the group. This action has been criticized by human rights organizations, who accuse Tel Aviv of employing starvation as a method of warfare.

In a continuation of his statements made on Sunday, Qassem once more denounced the execution of the inhumane practice, emphasizing its particularly egregious nature during the sacred month of Ramadan, dedicated to fasting and spiritual reflection.

He additionally stated that Hamas is ready to engage in negotiations for a prisoner exchange based on revised conditions.

“The responsibility lies with the occupying forces to convincingly demonstrate their commitment to mediators, a crucial step for advancing the agreement’s subsequent phases,” he stated, emphasizing that adherence to the ceasefire terms by the regime is vital for any forward movement.

In response to inquiries about potential U.S. efforts to facilitate the release of American hostages held in Gaza, a Hamas spokesperson indicated a willingness to engage with American officials. The spokesperson noted that “there is no issue” in meeting with U.S. representatives, acknowledging that they hold “leverage over the occupation.”

On Wednesday, the White House verified reports indicating that the United States has conducted direct negotiations with Hamas.

The administration of President Donald Trump has deployed Adam Boehler, the U.S. official responsible for negotiations concerning American captives abroad, to engage in dialogue over the situation of U.S. hostages reportedly held in Gaza, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

According to observers, the confirmation indicates a recognition of Hamas’ influence in determining the future of Gaza.

Qassem emphasized that the liberation of Israeli captives who hold US citizenship would only be possible through a comprehensive agreement.
