7 NATO supply trucks destroyed in ambush in Afghanistan

At least seven trucks carrying supplies to NATO bases have been destroyed in an ambush in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan, Press TV reports.

Local sources in Kandahar province said the incident happened in Maiwand District, located 50 miles northwest of Kandahar on Monday.

One vehicle belonging to Afghan security forces was also destroyed. However, the incident bore no casualties, according to the sources.

Taliban groups have claimed responsibility for the attack, with their spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claiming that eight trucks, along with one vehicle were destroyed and five other trucks were damaged.

Attacks on foreign troops have increased recently as Taliban militants have announced the beginning of their spring offensive across Afghanistan.

The US-led war in Afghanistan removed the Taliban from power in 2001, but insecurity remains in the country, despite the presence of thousands of US-led troops.
