Iran and US Engage in Indirect Negotiations in Oman
In the Omani capital of Muscat, Iranian and American delegations convened for their initial round of indirect negotiations.

Esmaeil Baghaei, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, announced on Saturday that negotiations have commenced. “Indirect discussions between Dr. Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, and Steve Witkoff, the U.S. President’s Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, are underway,” he stated in a post on his X account.
The discussions, facilitated by Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, are taking place with negotiators from Iran and the United States stationed in different rooms. Communication and exchanges of positions and perspectives are being channeled through the Omani intermediary.
As negotiations commenced, Baghaei conveyed to IRIB News in Muscat that Iran’s primary and unequivocal aim in the discussions is to safeguard its national interests.
Araghchi detailed Iran’s stance in a meeting with his Omani counterpart before the negotiations, with the intention of relaying these positions to the United States.
Baghaei stated that efforts are underway to provide diplomacy with a genuine opportunity, aiming to make progress not only on the nuclear matter but, more crucially, on the issue of lifting sanctions.
He highlighted that the Islamic Republic has maintained a steadfast dedication to diplomatic principles, underscoring its commitment on the nuclear matter over the past two decades.
Baghaei emphasized that these discussions underscore Iran’s commitment to safeguarding its national interests through diplomatic channels.
Iran has dismissed the possibility of direct talks with the United States, citing the “maximum pressure” strategy and military threats employed by Trump as key reasons for this decision.
Despite the current situation, Iranian officials have shown a readiness to pursue diplomatic avenues, emphasizing a serious commitment to dialogue. They consider the discussions in Oman as an initial move to evaluate Washington’s intentions and determination.
After a meeting with his Omani counterpart, Araghchi stated that Iran is pursuing a dignified agreement with the United States that is based on equal conditions.
He expressed optimism, stating that if the opposing party maintains a similar stance, there could be an opportunity, with divine blessing, for a preliminary agreement paving the way to negotiations.
Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, stated on Friday that a potential agreement could be reached, contingent upon Washington ceasing its intimidation tactics and threats directed at Tehran.
He stated that if the American side refrains from bringing up unrelated issues, imposes no excessive demands, and abandons any threats or intimidation, the prospects of reaching an agreement are promising.
The Islamic Republic of Iran asserts its commitment to dialogue and interaction grounded in mutual respect, categorically rejecting any form of intimidation and pressure.
