Iranian security forces have apprehended the perpetrators of a deadly attack that killed a provincial official and three officers in the country’s southwestern province of Khuzestan.

The General Intelligence Office of Khuzestan Province announced on Tuesday that the assailants were identified and eventually detained following an intelligence operation.

The attackers were reportedly members of a terrorist cell funded and directed by Israeli spying services and those of a regional Arab country.

On April 2, Colonel Rahman Mousavi, a provincial deputy police chief, said three officers were killed when unknown gunmen opened fire on a temporary police station at a park in the city of Hamidiyeh, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of the provincial capital city of Ahvaz.

The police officers were on duty at the makeshift station set up for the Nowruz holidays when they came under the attack.

In April 2014, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said it had busted a major terrorism and sabotage network in Khuzestan.

The arrested terrorists had reportedly entered Iran to carry out bombings, terrorist operations and other acts of sabotage in certain important locations in order to cause insecurity and panic in the country.
