Iran Calls Two-State Solution an Empty Promise Violating Palestinian Rights

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has reasserted the nation's rejection of the "two-state solution" as a proposed resolution to the Palestinian issue. Araghchi emphasized that the concept has exacerbated the injustices experienced by the oppressed Palestinian population.

In Vatican City on Friday, the chief diplomat engaged in discussions with the Vatican’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, where he delivered his remarks.

Despite initially being presented as a proposed resolution, the “solution” has over the decades emerged as an “unachievable promise,” leading to an “increasing violation” of Palestinian rights, Araghchi stated.

He further remarked that Israel persists in its endeavors to undermine Palestine through colonial strategies.

The Islamic Republic has put forward a proposal for a solution that entails the creation of a unified democratic state throughout Palestine. This would be achieved through a referendum involving all original inhabitants of the region, encompassing individuals from Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities, according to the foreign minister’s statement.

An official reiterated elements of a proposal crafted by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

In his comments, the foreign minister underscored the dire circumstances prevailing across the Palestinian territories, with a particular focus on the Gaza Strip. He accused the Israeli government of conducting a genocidal conflict while imposing an almost complete blockade since October 2023.

He emphasized that the global community holds both a legal and ethical obligation to take action in order to halt the ongoing atrocities.

He urged all nations and people to denounce the crimes occurring in Gaza and to take swift action to stop these horrific acts, emphasizing the urgent necessity of delivering critical humanitarian assistance to the embattled region.

Araghchi, currently in Rome for the fifth round of indirect discussions between Iran and the United States, utilized the occasion to update senior Vatican officials on the Islamic Republic’s stance concerning the peaceful application of nuclear energy.

He emphasized that the nation’s nuclear program is dedicated to peaceful objectives, asserting that the Islamic Republic upholds its right to utilize nuclear energy for developmental purposes, in accordance with international law.

The meeting addressed recent advancements in the bilateral relations between Iran and the Vatican, alongside deliberations on interfaith dialogue and peace initiatives.

Araghchi underscored the significance of continuous dialogue among different religious communities to foster mutual understanding and encourage peaceful coexistence.

The meeting, which included the presence of the Vatican’s Foreign Minister, Bishop Paul Gallagher, involved the offering of condolences on the death of Pope Francis and the conveyance of congratulations on the election of Pope Leo XIV.
