Iran confirms arrest of 3 American trespassers

Iran has arrested three Americans who illegally entered the country through its border with Iraq.

Officials say the case is under investigation.

In northern Iraq, a Kurdish official said the three Americans were backpackers who were arrested after having been warned on the Iraqi side not to hike in the mountains because of the proximity of the border with Iran, AFP reported.

The US Embassy in Baghdad has announced that it, too, is looking into the case.

Iran and the US have had no diplomatic relations for nearly three decades.
