Iran Blasts Saudi-Backed UN Rights Resolution against Syria

Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations Gholamhossein Dehqani blasted approval of a Saudi-sponsored draft resolution by the UN Human Rights Committee on the alleged human rights violations by the Syrian government.

“This draft resolution ignores the boundaries between the terrorists and those who are fighting against them,” Dehqani said on Friday.

He deplored the anti-Syria resolution as politically motivated and containing sheer lies.

The draft resolution issued against the Syrian government initiated by Saudi Arabia and supported by some countries, including Qatar, the UAE and the US was approved by the UN Human Rights Committee on Thursday.

“The UN General Assembly condemns any attack against Syria’s moderate opposition and it calls for suspension of these attacks in order to prevent strengthening the positions of the ISIL and the Al-Nusra Front,” parts of the Saudi-sponsored UN draft resolution reads.

Iranian officials have always voiced Tehran’s opposition to the Western countries’ supports for the terrorists groups in Syria.

On Monday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian underlined the need for a change in the western countries’ approach towards the terrorists fighting the Syrian government and a stop of their logistical and financial support for the militants.

“The western countries and their regional allies need to have a firm determination to put an end to the terrorists’ flow into Syria,” Amir Abdollahian said.

He called for serious international determination to fight against the terrorist groups, and said, “Holding elections in Syria needs preparations, including putting an end to the war in the Muslim country, controlling borders and differentiating opposition groups from terrorist groups.”

Amir Abdollahian reiterated that Iran has repeatedly announced that the Vienna talks were not supposed to make a decision about Syria’s fate on behalf of the Syrian nation.

“The meeting should have helped countries supporting terrorists modify their approach,” he said.

He underlined that holding democratic elections in Syria is an effective solution to over four-and-a-half years of conflict in the Arab country.

Amir Abdollahian pointed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as the “legal president” of Syria, and stressed that a political process should not decide whether he can contest the upcoming elections.
