Iran Appoints Saudi Arabia’s New Ambassador to Tehran

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's Foreign Minister, has announced that Saudi Arabia has selected a new ambassador to Tehran following a China-mediated agreement that settled a seven-year estrangement between the two countries two months ago.

Yesterday, Saudi Arabia appointed its new ambassador to Tehran. In response, Amir-Abdollahian told IRNA that they would soon announce the name of their new ambassador to the Saudi government.

On March 10, a reconciliation agreement was signed in Beijing wherein the two countries agreed to appoint new ambassadors and reopen their embassies within two months.

Iran’s Foreign Minister declared Wednesday that his colleagues have been devoting weeks of effort to get the embassy and consulate ready to reopen.

At a meeting in Beijing on April 6, the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia, which had not met for seven years, highlighted the importance of carrying out the agreement mediated by China.

Both sides have praised the detente for its potential to reduce tension in the Middle East region.

In January 2016, after the Saudi government executed prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran leading to Saudi Arabia severing diplomatic relations with Iran.
