Iran FM assigns new deputy

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Wednesday appointed Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh as his deputy for legal and international affairs.

Akhoundzadeh, who served as deputy foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs since October 2008, was introduced during a ceremony at the Iranian Foreign Ministry here in Tehran on Wednesday.

Akhoundzadeh replaced Seyed Mohammad Ali Hosseini who served as the deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs for about two years.

Akhoundzadeh, a 54 year-old engineer, has served the country in a wide range of different posts as a career diplomat, including Iran’s Charge D’affaires to New Dehli (1981), Iranian Ambassador to Dhaka (1981-1984), Iran’s Charge D’affaires to London (1984-1986), Head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Center for European Studies (1986-1990, Director General for Political and International Affairs (1991-1993), Iranian Ambassador to Islamabad (1993-1998), Advisor of Iranian Foreign Minister for International Affairs (1998-2002) and Iran’s envoy to Vienna (2005-2006).
