Iran Ground Force to hold major drills

Commander of Iran’s Ground Forces Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan announces plans to hold a massive military maneuver in the near future.

“This maneuver, which will focus on human resources and state-of-the-art equipment of the Ground Forces, will further demonstrate the prowess of the [Iranian] armed forces to the world,” Gen. Pourdastan said on the sidelines of a military conference on Sunday.

The senior commander praised the successful conclusion of the Iranian Navy’s Velayat 90 drills near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, saying the war games proved that Iran can protect its interests in national and international waters.

The 10-day naval exercises, which started on December 24, 2011 and ended on January 2, 2012, took place in line with a recent directive by The Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, instructing Iranian Armed Forces to maintain total readiness to defend the nation against any potential threats.

Pourdastan pointed to the past record of Western animosity towards Iran, arguing the enemy is simultaneously using soft and hard threats against Tehran.

“In line with the global developments and their own interests, Western countries are, today, using soft war [tactics] as the core of their strategy and it is [only] natural for us to have a defense [tactic] when the enemy starts a war.”
