A senior Iranian lawmaker says the resignation of Syria’s opposition coalition chief is a sign of weakness in the foreign-backed militants fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

The Islamic Consultative Assembly News Agency (ICANA) reported that the Chairman of Iranian Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi made the remarks in an interview on Monday.
On Sunday, leader of Syria’s opposition National Coalition Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib resigned from his post in protest against the institutional limitations of the foreign-backed body.
The Iranian MP stated: “Al-Khatib’s resignation is another sign of weakness and division in the opposition against the Syrian government and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.”
Khatib issued a statement on his Facebook page on Sunday, saying that he had promised to resign if what he called certain red lines were reached. He did not provide any further explanation.
On Monday, Boroujerdi also condemned the West’s silence against the worst cases of human rights violation such as killing women and children in Syria, and the United Sates’ adoption of terrorism to fight against the Syrian government.
He noted: “The responsibility for the killing of innocent Syrians rests with countries that have officially supported these terrorist groups … and unfortunately some regional countries are also among them.”
