US uses Human Rights to weaken Iran, Syria

A senior Iranian lawmaker has lashed out at the United States for imposing sanctions on Iran and Syria, reiterating that Washington uses human rights as a tool to exert pressure on independent countries.

The US Treasury Department on Wednesday imposed new sanctions against Syria and Iran over accusations that Damascus is abusing human rights and Tehran is supporting the Syrian government.

However, a member of Iran’s Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Hossein Naqavi Hosseini downplayed the sanctions effort on Saturday, saying, “The new US sanctions will have no impact on the Iranian nation’s will.”

He added that under th influence of the Zionist lobby, Washington exerts pressure on independent countries to “undermine their power,” Majlis news agency (ICANA) reported.

The legislator emphasized that Tehran and Damascus are pioneers in the global fight against Zionism.

He added that the US believes that “the spread of Islamic and anti-arrogance uprisings” in the Middle East have endangered Israel’s security.

This is the reason that the US Treasury Department seeks to mount pressure on Tehran and Damascus under the pretext of defending human rights, Naqavi Hosseini said.

He also criticized double standard policies of the US and its allies on human rights, saying international circles, and the UN Human Rights Council in particular, are keeping silent on anti-human crimes and the killing of women and children by the Saudi-backed Bahraini regime.
