Iran Not Engaged in Direct Communication with Syria’s Government: Spokesperson

The Iranian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson has refuted claims of any direct communication between Tehran and the newly established governing group in Syria.

In a press conference held on Monday, Esmaeil Baqaei clarified that Iran currently maintains no direct communication with the opposition factions responsible for toppling Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria.

He highlighted Iran’s previous intervention in combating terrorism in Syria, mentioning that there had been interactions with several Syrian opposition groups aimed at resolving the crisis.

The spokesperson reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to upholding Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing that determining Syria’s future should be exclusively the prerogative of its people.

He emphasized the critical need to avert Syria from becoming a sanctuary for the emergence of terrorism.

Emphasizing the longstanding political and cultural ties between Iran and Syria, along with Iran’s support for Syria in its fight against terrorism, Baqaei stated, “Moving forward, our decisions will be tailored based on the actions of Syria’s current leadership.”

On December 22, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, asserted that a faction of rioters, with the strategic support and intervention of foreign nations, successfully capitalized on Syria’s internal vulnerabilities, driving the country into a state of turmoil.

In a recent statement, the Leader criticized the strategies implemented by the United States, Israel, and their allies in Syria, asserting that these actions have resulted in significant turmoil and disorder in the region. Further accusing these parties of overconfidence, the Leader dismissed their recent assertions as exaggerated and unfounded.

Ayatollah Khamenei has confidently forecasted an improved future for the region, emphasizing that tomorrow holds promise beyond the present challenges. He highlighted the potential rise of a resilient and honorable group in Syria, noting that the nation’s youth, having endured significant losses, are poised to take a stand. With their educational institutions, homes, and public spaces mired in instability, Khamenei asserted that these young Syrians have little left to sacrifice, thus compelling them to resolutely oppose and dismantle the forces responsible for perpetuating the region’s turmoil.
