Iran condemns terrorist attack in northwestern Libya

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has condemned a recent terrorist attack that claimed scores of lives in the northwestern part of war-wracked Libya.

On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari condemned the attack while expressing concern over the exacerbation of the security situation in the North African country.

The Iranian official added that the current situation should be resolved within the framework of national dialog based on the interests of the Libyans.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always warned about the consequences” of support lent to terrorists by the countries that both “instrumentalize terrorist movements” and “serve as their sources of intellectual inspiration, funds and arms,” the Foreign Ministry official stated.

“The interconnected adverse effects and threats, which have resulted from such policy, are now visible in various countries across the region and the world,” he added.

Earlier in the day, at least 65 people were killed in a truck bomb attack that struck a police training center in Libya’s city of Zliten. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the terror strike, which is also believed to have wounded 127 others.

Libya has been struggling with instability since 2011, when the country’s then dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, was overthrown and armed groups as well as regional factions engaged in a conflict.

In February last year, the country’s major northern city of Sirte was overrun by Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, which in addition to wreaking havoc to Iraq and Syria, is trying to extend its presence to nearby regions.
