Iran Opposes Any Possible Military Operations in Syria

The Iranian foreign ministry in a statement on Tuesday voiced opposition to any possible military operations against Syria, stressing readiness to contact with Damascus and Ankara to resolve the existing concerns peacefully.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran views as illegitimate the US military men’s presence on Syria and considers the US decision to end occupation of the Syrian territories and withdraw the country’s military men from Syria as a measure which should have happened much earlier,” the statement said on Tuesday.

It added that the Iranian foreign ministry precisely pursues worrying news about the possibility for the Turkish military forces’ deployment in the Syrian territories, warning that any military attack will not obviate Ankara’s security concerns and will inflict extensive damages and tolls.

“Therefore, the Islamic Republic of Iran is opposed to any possible military operations,” the statement said.

It stressed Iran’s readiness for rapid contacts with the Turkish and Syrian officials to obviate the concerns, saying that respecting Syria’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the Adena agreement is a good basis for these talks.

The unexpected announcement by President Trump that he would draw down the US military presence in Syria to make way for Turkish troops was greeted by the Kurds as a betrayal of the trust established during the fight, which has cost the lives of more than 12,000 members of the SDF.

For the Kurds, the decision to permit Turkey to invade marked the latest in a long history of betrayals of Kurdish aspirations by the US.

The SDF claimed on Monday that the Syrian and Russian army troops had been sent to Manbij region in Northeastern Aleppo as the US army is leaving the Kurds along in the face of an imminent attack by the Turkish Army and its allied militants.

After the US military troops retreated from their military positions and their security mechanism agreement with Turkey failed, the Syrian military troops backed by the Russian army are moving fast towards Manbij, the SDF wrote on its Twitter account on Monday.

No other source has confirmed the report yet. Damascus has not made any comment on the SDF claim either.
