Iran Pres. hails local medical progress

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has praised Iranian scientists for successfully manufacturing Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) hearing screening technology domestically.

In a ceremony marking the start of a nation-wide Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program, Ahmadinejad noted that the breakthrough to develop the much needed technology made Iran one of seven manufacturers in the world.

Addressing Thursday’s ceremony the president stated, “Manufacturing the (OEA) machine is another step in the technological advancement of the Islamic Republic” and added, “Securing infant [hearing-ability] with this machine is a laudable achievement.”

EHDI is a process set up to screen every newborn for potential hearing loss in order to allow doctors to take early intervention measures if needed.

The OEA screener uses a complex technology to assess a newborn’s hearing ability by simply wearing earplugs for a few seconds.
