Iran says sanctions doomed to fail

Iran’s foreign minister says the West should learn from its past and explore a diplomatic resolution to the nuclear standoff they have created.

Previous sanctions against Iran have proved a failure and further sanctions would face the same fate, Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Friday, ISNA news Agency reported.

The West, led by the United States and Israel, accuses Iran of seeking nuclear weapons and has been rigorously lobbying for support on additional UN Security Council (UNSC) sanctions against Tehran.

Mottaki also noted that an upcoming summit of the Group of 15 in Tehran will focus on economic cooperation among member states.

Speaking to reporters on the side lines of the 23rd Tehran International Book Fair, he emphasized that more than ten countries will participate in the G-15 conference at presidential and ministerial levels, underlining the significance of the meeting.

The group was established at the ninth meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in the former Yugoslavia back in 1989.
