European Commission sounds alarm over EU economy

Across most of Europe the weather has turned colder and wetter. Concern is growing that the coronavirus will thrive this winter, leading to nationwide lockdowns and even greater financial misery.

The European Semester Autumn Package was presented by the EU Commission on Wednesday. The report highlights how government spending is too high in 15 of the bloc’s 27 nations. Energy costs and inflation are also too high.

The commission is calling on EU countries to retrain people to solve the problem of staff shortages in sectors such as health and construction. It’s clear the current situation is difficult for the bloc’s youth.

EU lawmakers have been debating the bloc’s social crisis. They warn of political consequences if leaders don’t provide greater support for citizens. And it’s in this context many analysts are saying the next few months could be make or break for the EU.
