Iranian Speaker: IPU Meeting Good Opportunity to Revive Respect for Int’l Laws

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said that the Inter-Parliamentary Union's meeting is a good opportunity to discuss ways to make all the world states respect the international laws and agreements.

This year, the main issue on the IPU meeting’s agenda is studying methods to devise international agreements and make all the world countries obey the international laws, Larijani told reporters before leaving Tehran for Belgrade to participate in the IPU meeting on Sunday.

He described obedience to the international laws as one of the lost issues of the today world, and said, “Specially, in the past few years, the international laws and agreements have been violated and therefore, I think that respecting them is one of the fundamental issues of the today world.”

Elsewhere, Larijani said that he would confer with the Serbian officials on ways to further broaden relations and cooperation between the two countries, specially in the economic field.

Heading a parliamentary delegation, Larijani left Tehran for Belgrade on Sunday morning to attend the 141st Assembly of the IPU.

Larijani is set to address the Assembly on Iran’s stance towards regional and international issues. He is also scheduled to hold separate meetings with his counterparts from different countries.

Parliamentary delegations, including 70 speakers, 40 deputy speakers and 700 MPs, from some 140 countries will participate in 141st IPU Assembly in Serbia’s Belgrade from October 13 to 17.

The theme of the IPU General Debate this year is ‘Strengthening international law: Parliamentary roles and mechanisms, and the contribution of regional cooperation’.
