Saudi-Backed Mercenaries Launch Aggressive Campaign in Sudan, Further Extending Yemen War

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, has stated that the ongoing fighting between Sudanese military factions is the "continuation" of the Saudi-led war on Yemen. He added that the war in Yemen is a "proxy war" that has been funded by foreign powers in order to create chaos and instability in the Middle East.

Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a member of Ansarullah’s political bureau, told Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television that those who had fought in Yemen were now engaged in combat in Sudan.

The conflict in Sudan is an extension of the turmoil in Yemen. Had the leaders of the Sudanese military not been involved in the war in Yemen, the clashes in Sudan would not have occurred. The combatants currently engaged in Sudan had previously participated in the war in Yemen.

In the beginning of this month, General Abdel Fattah Burhan’s Sudanese army had a disagreement with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who are led by General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, otherwise known as “Hemedti”, which resulted in clashes between them.

Hundreds have been killed and thousands displaced as a result of the fighting, disrupting an internationally supported process of transitioning to a civilian government. This has come four years after the ousting of President Omar al-Bashir and two years since the military coup.

Bukhaiti lamented the inability of the Sana’a government to assist the Yemenis stuck in Sudan, citing the issues brought on by the aggression and sanctions.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia, with assistance from the US and other Western states, as well as arms and logistics support from its Arab allies, began the devastating war on Yemen. This war has caused the death of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis and created the most catastrophic humanitarian situation in the world.

Mercenaries from Sudan have been enlisted by the invading coalition in an effort to defeat Ansarullah and restore a government in Yemen that is more favorable to Riyadh.

Recently, Oman, a neighbor of both Saudi Arabia and Yemen, has been mediating talks between the two nations in an attempt to end the eight-year conflict between them.

The United States does not desire to achieve peace in Yemen.

An Ansarullah official stated that the United States has acted in a detrimental manner in recent peace negotiations and has no desire for peace in Yemen.

He also highlighted that peace necessitates the removal of US troops from Yemen’s occupied regions.

Bukhaiti stated that Sana’a and Riyadh had reached an agreement on numerous matters and were now in the process of reducing tensions.
