Six killed amid political turmoil in Egypt

At least six people have been killed and dozens more injured as political tensions intensified in Egypt following the ouster of former president, Mohamed Morsi.

Violence broke out on Friday in several parts of the country as supporters of the deposed president held nationwide rallies, demanding Morsi’s reinstatement.

At least three people were reportedly killed in the capital Cairo, after security forces opened fire on pro-Morsi demonstrators who were marching toward the club of the Republican Guard, where Morsi is being held.

In a separate incident, at least two people were killed in clashes between supporters and opponents of Morsi in the southern city of Luxor

Another person was killed in Giza, located on the west bank of the Nile, some 20 kilometers southwest of central Cairo.

Meanwhile, twenty others were wounded in clashes in the city of Damanhour, the capital of the Beheira Governorate.

Morsi was unseated on July 3 and the chief justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, was sworn in as interim president of Egypt on July 4.

Morsi is reportedly being held “preventively” by the military. Senior army officials say he might face formal charges over accusations made by his opponents.

Several arrest warrants have been issued for members of Muslim Brotherhood.
