Anti-US rallies continue in Kashmir

Thousands in Indian-administered Kashmir have taken to the streets to voice their anger over the desecration of Islam’s holy book, Qur’an, in the US.

The anti-US rallies were held in several districts of the Himalayan region on Thursday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Several people belonging to Sikh and Hindu faiths also took part in the demonstrations.

The protesters, who were shouting anti-US slogans, described the act as despicable, calling for the punishment of those behind the desecration of the Qur’an.

Several political groups have called for a complete shutdown and strikes on Friday.

The protests come after pages from the holy book were torn up and burned in Washington, as well as in other US cities.

The move has outraged Muslims and followers of other religions all over the world.

The developments come as violence continues to rock Kashmir.

At least five more protesters were killed and 25 others injured in clashes with government troops on Wednesday.

Security sources say troops opened fire on citizens after protests turned violent in the southern town of Mendhar.

Top separatist leader, Syed Ali Geelani, has called on people to block Indian army camps with sit-in protests.

“I have urged people to stage peaceful sit-in protests in front of army and security force camps in Kashmir,” Geelani told reporters in Srinagar on Thursday.

Over 90 Kashmiri protesters have lost their lives at the hands of Indian troops since the unrest erupted back in June.

The Indian government has been criticized for favoring the use of force over finding a diplomatic solution to the issue.
