Iraqi security forces, backed by volunteers, have managed to gain ground against the Takfiri ISIL terrorists in Iraq’s Western province of Anbar.

According to a military source, an operation was carried out on Thursday, when the strategic bridge of al-Karmah as well as a former weapons manufacturing factory, located south of the provincial capital city of Ramadi, were recaptured, Iraq’s al-Sumaria satellite TV network reported.

The troops and volunteers, who were supported by Iraqi fighter jets, also killed a number of ISIL militants during the offensive.

The gains came a day after Iraqi army soldiers backed by Shia fighters advanced toward the ISIL-held city of Tikrit in Salahuddin Province. The strategic city fell to ISIL following their advance into Iraq from Syria in June 2014.

According to Iraqi media, a number of villages and oilfields near the city, which is the birthplace of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, have been retaken.

The crisis in Iraq escalated after the ISIL terrorists took control of the city of Mosul on June 10, which was followed by the fall of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital, Baghdad.

Ever since, the terrorists have resorted to atrocious crimes against the Iraqis in an attempt to breed fear.
