Iraq’s Kata’ib Hezbollah urges government to send military forces to Syria

An influential Iraqi anti-terrorism organization has called on the government of Baghdad to deploy military forces to Syria in order to bolster the Damascus administration in its struggle against foreign-backed Takfiri militants. This appeal comes in response to the recent escalation of terrorist activities in the northwestern regions of Syria.

The Hezbollah Brigades issued a statement via Telegram on Tuesday, calling for action due to concerns that the Syrian conflict may extend its impact across the region.

A spokesperson for the group stated that they advocate for the Iraqi government to proactively deploy its regular military forces in collaboration with the Syrian government, given that these factions present a threat to Iraq’s national security and regional stability.

The spokesperson stated that the organization is “carefully observing the violent actions against the Syrian population,” while also confirming that no decision has been made regarding the deployment of its fighters to Syria.

The chairman of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, also referred to in Arabic as Hashd al-Sha’abi, has issued a cautionary statement highlighting that developments in Syria carry direct consequences for Iraq’s national security.

Fayyadh announced that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has issued directives to bolster the presence and reinforcement of military units on the frontlines, highlighting the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) as a crucial component in safeguarding Iraq along its border with Syria.

He emphasized that Israel aims to exert dominance in the region through military conflict and the use of weaponry, noting that Syrian defense systems have been targets of assaults by the occupying forces.

The head of the Popular Mobilization Forces stated that the Syrian military has faced numerous challenges, including assaults by Israel, an extended conflict, economic sanctions, and differing agendas within the region.

On Wednesday, regions in the northwest of Syria, including Aleppo and Idlib provinces, witnessed a large-scale assault orchestrated by the Hay’at Tahrir al-Shams (HTS), a group identified with Takfiri militants. These forces, reportedly receiving foreign support, succeeded in capturing multiple areas.

Since that time, Syrian government forces have been locked in intense combat with terrorist factions in a bid to reclaim lost territories.

Militant groups are attempting to disrupt the Syrian government’s initiatives to establish security and stability within the nation, which continues to face regular hostilities from Israeli forces.

Israel has been a leading supporter of opposition groups challenging President Assad’s government since the onset of foreign-backed conflict in Syria in March 2011, often described as terrorist organizations by Damascus.
