Foreign-backed Syrian opposition demands more arms amid unrest in the country

Syria’s main foreign-backed opposition group has called on the international community to provide more weapons to militants fighting against the Syrian government.

George Sabra, the chairman of the so-called Syrian National Council (SNC), made the remarks in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Tuesday.

Sabra, whose group is supported by certain Western states and their regional allies — Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — also criticized UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi for what he referred to as his failure to resolve the Syrian crisis.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence.

The Syrian government also says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals.

And several international human rights organizations have accused the foreign-sponsored insurgents of committing war crimes.
