Amnesty International has issued a new call for the UK government to act on the last British resident in the United States Guantanamo prison Shaker Aamer’s behalf.

The organization’s new call comes ahead of a parliamentary debate on the plight of the Guant?namo detainee Shaker Aamer, who has been locked up in the notorious detention center in Cuba for 11 years despite never having been charged with any offence.

“The situation at Guant?namo is at crisis point. We need to see the UK government renewing its efforts to at long last secure freedom for Shaker Aamer if he is not to be charged”, Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said.

“As the hunger strike at Guant?namo accelerates, the UK government should answer the question: is it doing enough to get Aamer out of there?”

Aamer is currently on hunger strike in protest against the appalling conditions he and his fellow inmates are subjected to, as well as the US troops’ mistreatment of The Holy Qur’an at the illegal detention center.

Earlier this month, an online petition to release Shaker Aamer secured over 100,000 signatures needed for a parliamentary debate.
