US warns EU of Mideast arms race

Amid efforts to rally support for tougher UN sanction against Iran, the US has encouraged the European Union to continue pressuring Iran over its nuclear program.

Addressing EU lawmakers in Brussels on Thursday, US Vice President Joe Biden said Iran’s nuclear program now risks sparking a nuclear arms race “in some of the most unstable parts of the world.”

“[a Middle East arms race]…would be an irony that our children, our grandchildren and our great-grandchildren would not forgive us, in my view, to allow to come to pass,” said Biden, urging the EU to take action.

Biden went on to threaten Iran with “further consequences” and increased isolation. “Iran faces a stark choice, abide by international rules and rejoin the community of nations or face further consequences and increased isolation.”

Biden went on to claim that “Iran’s nuclear program violates its obligation and… the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.”

Despite Western allegations, Iran argues that as a signatory to the NPT it has the right to the peaceful use of nuclear technology for medical research and electricity generation.

The NPT is a landmarked document with the three main pillars of disarmament, non-proliferation and the right to peaceful nuclear energy.
